Mery Gates is delighted to present Brian Oake’s solo exhibition Nocturne No. 1. The exhibition will be on view from October 23rd to November 21st with an opening on Saturday October 23rd from 6-8pm. Gallery hours are Saturday and Sunday 12-5pm or by appointment.
The sculptures presented in this show are constructed from Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). Each individual board has a specific purpose within each composition, acting as a filter, amplifier, modulator, or sampler. Configured by the wires connecting them together, the resulting feedback loops generate a trance-like sound. In visual concert, lights along the circuit paths illuminate and die as the signals travel through.
The resulting sound and light scape is both generative and interactive. Large sculptures modulated by light sensors listen for footsteps and fractions of sentences, mimicking the viewer in unexpected delay. The smaller sculptures whir and click on discordant loops, oriented toward their larger siblings.
